NURSERY TRENDS FOR 2011

NEUTRALS
Soft, pale colors

The current trend for nurseries is to use very soft pale neutrals, as people are leaning toward not finding out the sex of their babies prior to birth (a return to old fashioned medical practices!), therefore the design will work for boys or girls equally.

VICTORIAN VINTAGE
Grown-up style furniture miniaturized

For girls:Wood sleigh beds, old-fashioned vintage iron canopy cribs and crystal chandeliers, soft muslin bed testers, heirloom quilted voile bedding.
For boys: Antique wood furniture, plaid bedding, canvas drapery, burlap storage boxes.

HOW TO: Maximize a small kitchen

Scale: Keep it small!
Oven, fridge, cook top and garbage compactor:
  • Use a microwave and conventional oven combination
  • Keep the fridge to an under-counter size.
  • Use a fully recessed infrared burner for cooking.
  • Use a narrow garbage compactor.
  • Cooker hoods now come in a pull-out system that slides back when not in use.
  • Use a small single sink that also has a fitted chopping board to cover the bowl when not in use.
Hints:
  • For the cook top, if using gas, make sure it has a steel or glass cover that can be put down over the burners. That way you can use it as a worktop area when not cooking. If using electric, use one of the new infrared glass cook tops that can also serve as a work surface when not in use.
  • Have as much cabinet space as possible preferably all the way up to the ceiling and make sure corner cabinets have revolving shelf systems inside so the corners of the cabinets are used to capacity.

HOW TO: successfully break conventional design rules

Stay tuned, each week Lynn Henchman will share easy and stylish tips and ideas to improve your home decor!

How to successfully break conventional design rules:

·         Contrary to popular belief, sometimes filling a smaller room with larger scale furniture does in fact give it the illusion of being bigger.
·         You can expand a small space by adding level changes giving it more optical dimension.
·         A narrow staircase can be given drama and depth with recessed lighting running down each side of the staircase, making it almost sculptural.
·         Floor to ceiling doors can add height to rooms, and making the doors wider than average can give the rooms the illusion of being much larger.
·         You CAN paint a room dark if you add decorative dramatic lighting and sharp accents in furniture, rugs and art.
